How to get free professional photography for your band, your modeling portfolio, or just yourself!

A band, solo artist or model needs to have professionally shot photos available to them for promotional items such as websites, flyers and business cards. Professional photos can be very expensive, however you can get cheap and even free photos from photographers if you know the tricks! There is a Acronym in the modeling industry TFCD that stands for Trade for CD. What this means is the photographer and the model agree to trade services for the exchange of services, they work free for each other and payment is in the form of digital media.

This is great for start ups, on either side of the lens. You get photos for your band or modeling portfolio, the photographer gets photos for his or her portfolio. Mostly you will find new photographers although some experienced will do this but only if your band will compliment his or her portfolio in a unique and profitable way.

Pros: free photography

Cons: often inexperienced photographers, risk they though with the shots, some are non professional

Places to look:

  • Craigslist & backpage (not as recommended)

Always check references and never go alone to meet a photographer unless in a very populated location. If a photographer doesn’t want to sit and talk about what you are lookign for as well as what he/she is looking for then you might want to look for another photographer more intersted in capturing what you want. Make sure that this type of shoot allow both parties to gain from it, don’t let the photographer only take shots that he wants.

Ladies precaution: watch out for GWAs. This is “Guy With a Camera” and denotes an individual who takes shots for personal gain (often jack off material) and isn’t a true professional. they might even try to bhook up or touch you. They are common in the modeling industry, so common they have an acronymn! Check references always!
