Faking a Manager

Faking a Manager

In my experience, I learned that it is a good idea to have a manager in place when it comes to dealing with people who approach me wanting to do some sort of business with me as a musician. I’ve gotten a lot of scam deals tried on me, some I fell for in the beginning and most I got sharp enough to spot before I was sucked in. After a long time of having to deflect people that were trying to sucker me into some scam or otherwise dishonest venture, I finally decided to try telling these people, who often approached me in person, that they would need to email my manager and I gave them a card with a (fake) email address to my fictitious manager.

I found doing this 99% of the people didn’t contact the manager. The only people who did contact the manager were ones with legit deal. Some would argue with me, saying that it shoudl be my decision and not the managers. Well, inthe professional music industry with (as honest as it gets) real players, they will EXPECT you to have a manager. In fact that will prefer you do, as they want to deal with the manager and not the busy (and sometimes eccentric) artist.

Even if you or your band aren’t at th epoint where you need an actual true manager, it’s always a good idea to have some kind of manager in place even  even if it’s a fictious person. The reason for this is because a lot of people are gonna try to take advantage of you either to to try to make money from you or even to maybe make advances In other ways that you weren’t expecting. This fictious manager can act as a buffer between you, your band, and anyone trying to make any sort of deal from gigs to sponsorship and beyond.

Women in the music industry will find that many men approaching you are gonna want to do some kind of business with you and it’s not always good business. When you tell people that you have a manager you tend to filter out those who are just trying to get away with something that’s not totally honest.

Anybody who chooses to refuse to speak to your manager is not a professional it’s normal to speak to an artist manager. If somebody does not email or contact your manager or refuses to here is your big sign that they’re not professionals. Any profession on the music industry will prefer to speak to the manager rather than the artist because that is the professional business person you can take care of dealing
